£6 Sainsburys Languedoc 2001

A mix of three grapes this white is my favourite to date. It is complex, smooth, rich and very tasty. Like drinking a much more expensive wine and for £6 while on offer I had to buy more. Definitely recommended.

£6 Sainsburys Montino Rioja Spain

Was expecting better things from this one reduced in Sainsburys to £6. It was satisfactory but not inspiring where each gulp was tinged with a suspicion of overpowering bitterness. That said, it was in general not unpleasant to drink however I will not be buying this one again .

£5.49 Tesco Telegraph Station Pinor Noir

Recommended. I dont normally go for the Pinot Noir but I found this is is price range and is a nice easy drinking wine.

£5.99 Tesco The Reach Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Perfectly pleasant drinking. At this price it is recommended.

£4.99 Tesco Roko Cabernet Sauvignon Chile 2011

Acrid and sour. I bought 2 bottles of this wine and I am takeing one back for a refund. Enough siad.

£5.99 Tesco McWilliams Hayfield Pinot Noir

Recommended. This is a nice wine, in fact very nice at this price. The Pinot Noir grapes are not my usual target and they seem to associated with be slightly more expensive wines but this one is currently reduced to less than £6 and well worth a shot.

£6 Sainsburys Curico Valley Merlot

It was "bursting with cherry taste and a hint of spice" - but I thought it was a bit too bitter and rasping. This is quite a distinctive wine and great if you like that sort of thing but for me was not mellow or rounded enough.

£6 Sainsburys Coolwater Bay

£6 - Sainsburys Touraine Sauvignon Blanc

A easy drinking, tasty white. Recommended.

£6 Tesco Cabernet Sauvignon Carmenere

At the higher end of the price bracket this wine is still good value for money. Enjoyed this with roast lamb yesterday and it was an asset to  the meal. I would recommend this but not if they push the price back up to alleged £8 per bottle mark.

£5.50 Tesco The Fair Mile

On offer in Tesco at the moment - £5.50. This is a nice wine and one that I would recommend. It has a rich dark colour and good depth of taste. It is pleasant to drink. However if the price reverts to the pre-sales levels then it would be a shame as there are alternatives at this price. Just bought another one.

Update: This wine has turned into a favourite of mine for the time being - happy to replenish stocks while fixed at £5.50.

£4.99 Tesco Ridgy-Didge

This one is not so good. A bitter tasting wine and one that is not worth repeating given that there are so many better wines out there for the price.

£5.75 Tesco Errazuriz Merlot

Its from Chile so in with a shot. Update to follow... and it was good. I liked the flavour and colour of this wine and had an interesting taste. It was neither bitter nor acidic but rather had a mellow taste that was easy to drink. I had however kept this  wine cooler that normal and this may have affected its overall performance.

£5 Tesco Oglo Merlot

Should I be scared - looks basic - but actually it's, dare I say it, quite nice. I am not normally optimistic about cheap Italian wine but this wine challenges that. It tastes good and is worth buying again. I just did.

£6 Tesco Bancroft Pino Noir

Pushing the boat out here. Update to follow - i.e. once its drunk.

£5 Sainsburys Primitivo 2010

Don't be scared of this one - even though its an Italian. This wine is well rounded with a smooth flavoursome taste. It is well worth a try and I would buy more at this price.

£5.50 Sainsburys Le Fontegnac Claret

Posh looking label for an average wine. Currently reduced in Sainsburys this Claret is unremarkable. Fairly pale in colour and slightly bitter taste. It is however drinkable and ok as a reserve. I dont think I will stock up on this one.

£5 Tesco Lateral Sauv Blanc

Another remarkably good cheap wine. Easy to drink, tasty and not too acidic. This white is to my taste and at a bargain price. The red is also very good. I will be buying more of these at this price.

£6 Sainsburys La Patrie Cahors Malbec

This is approx £6 when reduced as it is now at Sainburys. Its quite good. Good colour and taste but doesn't quite hit the mark completely. It looks like it should be a little bit better than it is. That said, I have been a lot more disappointed in other wines than I am in this. OK to buy.

< £6 Sainsburys - Wairau Cove Sauv Blanc

Sainsburys again. Looks sophisticated but isnt. Slightly too acidic, its ok and I wouldnt say there is much wrong with it. Its just that its not that remarkable.

£6 Sainsburys Mount Riley Sauv Blanc

This is surprisingly good and is one of the better whites that I have tried recently. I cant believe its less than £6 per bottle. It is neither bitter nor rough but rather has a sort of sweetness and delicate taste that is easy and pleasant to drink. This one is recommended.

£5 Sainsburys BattleField Wine

Another cheap wine from Sainsburys, however this one was more of a battle to get through. It seemed pale in colour and lacked depth of flavour. It improved slightly as we neared the bottom of the bottle but overall I would not go for this one again.  Live and learn ;)

£5 - Tesco - Lateral Cabernet Sauvignon

Bought this red from Tescos out of frustration  - I couldn't see any other cheap wines that I liked. What a result - it is marvellous - rich, tasty, nice drinking. It has the taste and texture of a quality wine but is at basement prices. I am going to buy more of these. A good find.

I am finding that this wine is a bit hit-or-miss. In the last batch of 6 bottles that I have enjoyed it is noticeable that some of the wine is better than others. I am a bit surprised at this apparent difference in taste. The good bottles are great, the others less so. Reserving judgement on this one now.
